This client hired Plant Goddess to create a beautiful, usable space for their small backyard in Pasadena. The yard was full of weeds, and the pitch of the grade sloped towards the storage shed. Large Liquidambar tree roots were becoming a problem for the house. There were also privacy concerns due to the higher elevation of the home with the surrounding property. They wanted spaces to enjoy their yard, do yoga, entertain, and grow vegetables.
We designed the new Ipe deck and surrounding landscape at a lower elevation than the house, creating a sense of intimacy and privacy. The deck has a landing at the top that connects both sets of doors, then steps down to the main deck area. The wrap around step also provides additional seating when entertaining. The existing concrete driveway was demolished and the broken concrete, or urbanite, was used for the new hardscape areas. Urbanite was also used for the seat wall separating the yard from the new patio area. A beautiful Coast Live Oak was planted as a central focal point and a new fountain installed for pollinators and birds. Along the edge of the old driveway, we designed and built raised garden beds for the new kitchen garden.
